WHAT THEY SAID…

Throughout my time as a student of Acting and now as a teacher of the subject, rarely have I encountered a teacher as passionate and so ardently enamoured with the profession and process as Rohan Tickell. He deftly employs every teaching instinct, every didactic muscle fibre, every creative sinew to draw out an outstanding level of work from his students. You don’t do the assignments because they’ve been set; you do them because you know that when you get to work on them with Rohan, you will find something exciting and oftentimes, more importantly, in the knowledge that the process will be an enjoyable one. On a personal note, I owe a lot to Rohan’s teaching. Not only did it equip me with the tools required to enjoy a successful career in acting, it also fuelled a fire within me to pass the knowledge on and become a teacher myself; something I am eternally grateful for. I cannot recommend Rohan Tickell more highly.

I was lucky enough to have been taught by Rohan during my time at Arts Educational Schools. Even though the Arts is something we all love, performance can come with a great deal of anxiety and pressure, something I often struggle with. However, Rohan had a way taking that out of his class. He took away the ego of the actor, the pressure to impress and simply made it about ‘the work’.  He showed me that often the detailed work put into a scene or a song etc, really can work as a safety blanket in those moments where nerves feel like they’re over taking. This is something I believe has really saved in moments in my career and for that I will be forever grateful to the wonderful Rohan Tickell.

Rohan's style of teaching is one the best balances of patience, encouragement and playfulness that there is out there. Rohan is the kind of teacher who rolls up their sleeves and really gets involved with whatever you're going through, be that finding something in an acting exercise or trying to overcome some personal obstacle that's holding you back. He's one of those people who you know has had a phenomenal career, not because he tells you, but because the tools he gives you to help navigate your own career speak for themself. I owe a lot of my success to Rohan and he has my highest recommendation.

Rohan was the first proper acting teacher I had the pleasure to work with in my ArtsEd audition for my degree course in MT. I didn’t feel confident in my acting abilities until I had done my first monologue in front of the panel that Rohan was on, and for the first time I felt listened to in my performance and not judged. The mentality of everyone’s acting being different and individual was always so clear when you stepped into his lessons. There was no right or wrong. I’m a physical and imaginative learner. The classes allowed a lot more freedom in second year than I felt in my first year. This is mainly down to me understanding the effect of Rohan’s work, and of course the proof is in the pudding when the man has clear evidence of his time being on stage in the big West End musicals! There’s a grounding feeling to be in his class, just the connection to the work at hand. It’s a sort of escapism that I now take into my performances on stage, where nothing outside of the stagey walls matter, as long as you can read into the intention of the character and be present.

I still remember the first piece of advice I was given by Rohan, which is the best acting advice I have ever been given. He helped me unlock barriers that I didn't know I had put up and, in doing so, allowed me to unleash my full acting potential. His focus and his eye for detail are exceptional and the skills he taught me have undoubtedly played a large part in the success of my acting career.

I worked with Rohan for the best part of 3 years during my professional training at Mountview. Rohan was my main acting teacher and a big part of my training; his focus on specificity, character development, energy transferal, and imaginative work is something I have carried through in to my career as an actor. Rohan was a fantastic mentor and always offered terrific support, encouragement and professional guidance in all areas of the industry. I would recommend Rohan to anyone looking to begin their training as an actor, as well as people looking to further their current skills or maintain their abilities.

Rohan has and will continue to be completely influential in my career as an actor. Throughout my training Rohan was always someone that I could go to for advice and to confide in. His open and honest approach to work is always wonderful and I cannot recommend him enough as a creative being.

Rohan doesn’t let you settle for average, he always makes sure that he provides you with the tools you need to achieve the best results you possibly can. His experience and breadth of work in the industry make him an incredibly knowledgeable and confident presence in any room. You trust his word, because he’s lived it. Most of what I have taken into my work in the industry has so much to do with Rohan’s teaching, especially in acting through song. He is always, at the heart of whatever he does, about the human connection to the text, the music and each other. I feel incredibly privileged to have been taught by Rohan. He truly is the teacher I learnt the most from in my three years of professional training. He always works with care and kindness. I carry his lessons and words with me all these years later.

Rohan's classes stand out as one of the highlights of my acting training. His style of teaching is both nurturing and challenging, and his individual attention to each actor's trajectory and needs is second to none. His wealth of experience and expertise in many styles means he gets the best out of you  - whether it be Sondheim, Shakespeare, acting through song, new writing, and more! For anyone looking to hone their craft, I would highly recommend Rohan. From aspiring to be an actor, to working in some of my dream theatres, I hold Rohan's teaching and techniques at my core. Rohan taught me in my final year at ArtsEd and that was enough to make a lasting impression. What set Rohan apart from my other teachers was the honesty, no bull approach, that was accompanied by 100% commitment and passion for my development. There is a fire in Rohan’s eyes when he is teaching and it’s infectious and hard not to become inspired by his energy. There were lots of teachers in my training who cared, but Rohan always said it exactly how it was - I loved that! He was never interested in blowing smoke, telling me how great I was. He believed, as I do, that being upfront about what needs to improve and what isn’t working is the best way to instil confidence. Let me know what I can do to be better and simply by being better I will gain confidence. All this is helped somewhat by the fact that he knows exactly what he’s talking about. He draws from his experience in the industry as a working performer and therefore his attention to detail in text is superb. He spots things you didn’t know were there but doesn’t make you feel like an idiot for missing it. Instead he gives you the tools to make sure you are able to discover it yourself the next time without him holding your hand. A true educator and a top bloke!

As quite a timid student, Rohan not only brought be out of my shell, but gave me the confidence to be bold in my acting. I can now take pride in making strong choices in both roles and auditions; I often think of Rohan’s advice during 1st year Acting Through Song classes when prepping my audition material. He provided such a great framework for tackling songs with an unclear or difficult arc. Rohan’s genuine care for each individual student made me feel fully supported during my time at ArtsEd. Even now, after graduating almost two years ago, I feel as though I can still confide in Rohan for both professional and life advice! He is one of the warmest teachers I have ever had and I have such fond memories of all our lessons.

Rohan Tickell taught me acting at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. I always looked forward to is classes because he was such an attentive teacher. He challenged our talents, gave great encouragement, asked questions to make us think outside the box, and always brought a new layer to the work we did in the room. He was also my tutor for me to go speak to when I needed to about my work or my process, and his listening for me was second to none. He’s a pleasure to have learned from and given tools for honing my craft which has helped me still to this day throughout my career, and my only wish is that we could do a professional job together as I know I would be able to learn a lot from just observing him work.

Rohan Tickell is an incredible teacher. He truly cares about his students; which is clearly seen in his passion when teaching. He challenges you to think beyond what’s there, what’s surface, and dives into the complexities of acting; whether that be through speech or song. He finds new ways of approaching text, such as The Cherry Orchard, which make them interesting and relevant; All while remaining so relatable as a person. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Rohan was one of my favourite teachers. He has truly changed the way I approach words and my acting has gone miles because of it.

I had the privilege of working with Rohan for three years, and thanks to him, my acting toolbox when I left drama school was jam-packed with goodness. Rohan is one of the most versatile, multifaceted humans I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Rohan made all the intimidating, vulnerable, and seemingly inaccessible forms of acting endearing and enjoyable. From intricate text work techniques, to performing Greek monologues, to acting games that were exhilarating and deeply informative. Simply spectating Rohan’s one-to-one work with another student in one of his classes was enough to fill pages and pages in my notebook. Most of all, Rohan’s teaching pushed me out of my comfort zone and showed me what I can achieve when I allow myself to live outside of my head. Since graduating, I’ve learnt that this confidence in myself and in my acting ability has been one of the greatest assets of all when attending professional auditions. Thank you Rohan.

Rohan Tickell is a very impressive teacher and mentor. His expansive knowledge enables him to teach using a variety of techniques, which are all delivered with the utmost passion.  Passion is what fuels his classes and he pushed me to constantly interrogate my work, enabling me to become a smarter performer. Rohan is the type of teacher that not only inspires me but pushes me further than I ever thought I could go. I always think of him when I audition and perform as he encourages me to make bold choices and take risks in performance which I have found immensely helpful in my career thus far. We’ve worked on a few practitioners, writers and directors from which he takes influence and learned how he interprets their ways through his teaching. Throughout my training there were many teachers that had a major impact on my learning and growth. Rohan was definitely a stand out teacher that helped me reach new height’s in my acting journey. This included monologues, script reading/ discovering text, acting through song and many more crucial subjects which would impact the growth of any young or old performer. He is a great teacher and has a real talent of listening and understanding every student and what makes them special actors as individuals helping them to find what is special and different about them to other performers and how they can use this to their advantage. I think with Rohan’s teaching, I really started to find myself as an actor and approach projects and text in a way that was my own. To this day, I still use the tools and lessons that he has passed on to me and I would recommend his teachings to any performers that wished to extend their toolkit in this industry.

I was taught by Rohan at Mountview Academy on the BA ACTING course. He is one of a few teachers that had a profound effect on me and my training and propelled me forwards as an actor and human being. Acting is in his blood and his teaching was always vibrant, interesting and from the heart. He pushed me towards reaching new realms of self confidence in both myself and in my craft. Rohan has a unique quality to teach with real patience, dedication and kindness whilst guiding you to push yourself to be bold and brave. His infectious persona made classes with him enjoyable and all the students always remarked on how much they loved his approach. He is a very special teacher. I have a profound memory of an exercise we did which pushed me to new heights as an artist, whilst always feeling safe and supported. I think of it often and Rohan made this possible. He is truly remarkable teacher, director and supporter, one, who I believe, cares deeply about his students and their desire to succeed.

The type of work that we did in Rohan’s lessons always allowed for play and creativity, helping us to find multiple perspectives and ways of interpreting the same text. He gives you fantastic insight for character work as well, helping you find ways to analyse details that are in the script, as well as looking at the bigger picture of their world. Having worked as a swing in the past, this has been incredibly valuable to creating distinctly individual characters. Aside from straight text work, his expertise and experience in the musical theatre world makes him an incredible tutor for acting through song. He’ll have you looking at song structure, journey type, and more in order to make informed artistic choices. Rohan will also give you some of the best feedback you could ask for. His comments are firm but fair, quite honestly the definition of constructive criticism. He never gives you anything that won’t somehow benefit or strengthen your work. I strongly believe that the work that I did with Rohan during my training is an integral reason as to why I’m a principal on the West End now. I wouldn’t have had this level of creative confidence without having learned from him.

He can distil complex theoretical ideas into simple imagery and catchphrases with incredible dexterity. Rohan gave me a wonderful insight into the craft and I am very thankful  for the lessons and techniques he has given me as an actor. If I am ever feeling stuck I return to the toolbox of both techniques and wisdom he gives each one of his students. Whether that be breaking down a script, approaching and building up a character, or a reminder to go back to the basics and trust my instincts. I have taken his toolbox into the industry with me and I am constantly adding, and returning to it wherever I go. Rohan’s lessons were always perfectly packed and laid out with detail for his students. He made things very easy to understand. I definitely had a light bulb moment in every lesson (which is the best feeling ever!!) Rohan sees what each of his actors need individually to grow and makes every task and obstacle an achievable one. He always made the space very comfortable and created a room where all the actors wanted to work hard and support one another. When I first came to drama school to study Musical Theatre, I’d hardly interacted with acting as a discipline, on it’s own. I remember finding the prospect of it really quite daunting. Rohan supported me in getting into the school and his support continued throughout the three years leading up to my graduation. Working with Rohan, he pushed me to be the best version of myself I could be. He encouraged a sense of individuality whilst also highlighting the importance of technique, rigour and discipline. His unending support, not only as a teacher, but also as a mentor and friend, gave me the confidence to pursue a professional career as an actor. Rohan goes above and beyond to ensure his students maximise their own potential, but that they are also safe in spaces that can often be vulnerable. Rohan is also one of the kindest people I know and he has an emotional stake in the success of all of his students, not only as actors but also as people. He genuinely cares about each and every one of his students and champions their own unique traits and qualities. His way of working really breeds a culture of bravery, boldness, collaboration and creativity in the actor’s space and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment of working with him.
